Anubias barteri var. barteri, often just called anubias, is a hardy rhizome plant from West Africa with broad, tough, deep green leaves. It grows larger than the well known var. nana, reaching 25 to 45cm tall with a creeping rhizome of 10 to 15cm or more. Size and leaf shape vary quite a bit from plant to plant, which is part of its charm.
In your tank it works best attached to driftwood or stones rather than buried, since the rhizome tends to rot if the substrate covers it. Tie or wedge it onto hardscape in the midground and let the roots grip over time. It is happiest in a shadier spot, which keeps algae off the slow growing leaves, and its very tough foliage is left alone by herbivorous fish. It also does well in terrariums and paludariums.

Our stock is harvested fresh and algae free, and conversion to the submerged form starts in our grow-out tanks, which maximises your success once it settles in. Submerged means grown fully underwater, the form it keeps long term in your aquarium. Emersed means grown with the leaves above the waterline, as many plants are raised before they adapt to life below the surface.
