Cardamine lyrata, also known as Japanese cress, is a marsh plant from Japan that adapts happily to life underwater. It grows long trailing stems, from 20 to 50cm, clothed in rounded bright green leaves, and it often puts out fine aerial roots along the stem. Its loose, cascading habit makes it a lively choice for the midground or background.
Plant it in small groups so the trailing stems knit together into a soft green thicket. It settles in easily and grows quickly under modest light, and it holds its best form when the water stays below 28C, which keeps the leaves full sized and the growth from getting leggy. Extra light and CO2 are not needed, though they do speed things along.
