Description
Description
Cryptocoryne axelrodii is a lesser-known but highly attractive species from the Cryptocoryne family, perfect for aquarists looking to add subtle texture and natural colour to their aquascape. Native to South America, it features slender, lance-shaped leaves that range in tone from olive green to reddish-bronze, depending on lighting and nutrient conditions.
This plant stays relatively low and compact, making it well-suited for the midground of small to medium aquariums or even as a background accent in nano tanks. Like most Crypts, it’s hardy and adaptable, thriving in both low-tech and CO₂-injected setups.
Key Features:
- Compact Growth Habit: Stays small and manageable, perfect for midground use or nano tanks
- Attractive Foliage: Narrow, lance-shaped leaves with olive green to bronze-red tones
- Low Maintenance: Grows well in low-tech setups without CO₂ injection
- Adaptable: Tolerates a wide range of water conditions once established
- Natural Look: Adds a soft, natural touch to aquascapes with minimal effort
Care Instructions
- Lighting: Low to medium; brighter light enhances colour but is not essential
- CO₂ & Fertilisation: CO₂ not required but will promote denser, faster growth; use root tabs or a nutrient-rich substrate for best results
- Temperature: 20–28°C
- pH: 6.0–7.5
- Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
- Growth Rate: Slow to moderate
- Placement: Midground
- Propagation: Through rhizome division; trim and replant healthy runners
Note: May undergo “Crypt melt” when first introduced to a new tank—this is normal. Leave the roots undisturbed and it will regrow.
