Cryptocoryne walkeri, known as Walker's crypt, is a rosette plant from Sri Lanka with dark green, strap-like leaves that rise from a central rootstock. Leaves reach around 10 to 15cm and form a dense, low clump. Under strong light it can take on a reddish-brown tint.
It sits well in the midground or towards the front, where the clustered leaves knit into a lush green patch. This is an easy, hardy crypt that settles into low-tech and high-tech tanks alike, doing best rooted in a nutrient-rich substrate. It spreads slowly by rhizome division, sending up new plants from the base, so a single clump gradually fills its space. If the leaves melt back after planting, do not worry: that is a normal crypt response to a new tank and fresh growth follows once it has adjusted.
