Description
Echinodorus 'Barthii', sold as the Red Melon Sword, is a rosette sword plant whose new leaves push out in a deep red that softens to green as they mature. It grows into a broad, upright rosette, which makes it a natural centrepiece for the midground or background of a larger tank.
Give it a nutrient rich substrate and it settles in as a steady, low fuss grower. Moderate light keeps it healthy, and stronger light with added CO2 will push the red pigment further and firm up the growth. It stays tidy with the odd trim, and over time it throws plantlets on its flower stalks that you can replant to build up your collection. Mature plants reach roughly 25 to 50cm tall and 20 to 30cm wide, so leave it room to spread.
