Description
Echinodorus cordifolius 'Marble Queen', the marbled Creeping Burhead or Radican Sword, is a variegated sword plant with longish ovate leaves and a heart-shaped base. The blades are marbled in darker and lighter green with reddish patches, a pattern that shows most strongly on emersed growth. Underwater leaves and petioles stay shorter, with leaf blades around 20cm.
This is a large, easy swordplant for the background to midground of bigger tanks, and it works well as a solitary centrepiece. It tolerates hard and alkaline water, though a nutrient-rich substrate and at least medium light bring out the best growth. It has a natural tendency to send up long-stalked aerial leaves, which makes it a good fit for open-top aquariums and tall paludariums where the variegated foliage and arching inflorescences of white flowers become a real feature. Cut the emersed leaves back and shorter submerged ones often follow.
