Eleocharis vivipara, umbrella hair grass, is the taller cousin of dwarf hairgrass. It grows as an aquatic grass, thin green stalks rising from roots that creep sideways and throw out runners. Grown in large clusters it makes a lovely background of fine, flowing grass.

In your tank it fills in on its own. Plant small portions a couple of centimetres apart and the roots send out runners in every direction, so over a few weeks a single cluster knits into a lush stand. Medium light keeps it growing steadily, and while extra light and CO2 are not required, they speed up growth and thicken the stand. It also grows submerged or emersed, which suits dry start setups and Wabi Kusa.

Care at a glance

  • Placement: Background
  • Lighting: Medium
  • CO2: Low, not required
  • Growth rate: Moderate
  • Difficulty: Intermediate
  • Colour: Green

Our plants are harvested fresh and algae free, and the conversion to submerged growth starts in our grow-out tanks, which maximises success once it settles into your aquarium.

Submerged means growing fully underwater, the form it takes once established in your tank. Emersed means growing with the leaves in humid air above the waterline, as it would in a dry start or on a Wabi Kusa.

Tones of baby plants in each handful, fun to detangle. Lovely strong healthy plantlets. Fast growers.
Lovely company to deal with ❤️

Nice thin blades of grass that end up growing into a dense mat if you plant closely enough to each other and trim it regularly. Loves co2 and nice bright light to help it grow more dense too.
