Glossostigma elatinoides, or glosso, is a New Zealand native and one of the smallest aquarium plants at just 2 to 3cm tall. Its tiny bright green leaves spread low and horizontal across the substrate, which makes it a classic foreground plant for nature-style and Japanese-inspired aquascapes.
Glosso carpets best with plenty of light. Given enough it stays low and creeps sideways into a tight green mat, and in dimmer tanks the stems reach upward instead. CO2 and soft water push growth along and help it fill in quickly. Plant small clumps a few centimetres apart and let them knit together, and keep taller plants from shading it out.
