Barclaya longifolia, green Barclaya, is an uncommon bulb-forming aquatic plant with long, wavy-edged leaves that grow from a corm at the base. The green form stays a fresh light green and makes a bold specimen, sitting best in the midground to background where its leaves can rise and spread. Leaves have been known to reach up to 81cm in length, so give it room to open out.
It is an easy grower that has stayed scarce simply through lack of supply. Under stronger light with CO2 and good feeding the undersides can take on a hint of red, while in more modest light it holds a clean green. It stores food in the corm and appreciates a nutritious substrate, and it feeds through the water column too, so trace elements are worth adding. Pair it with red stems and low carpets and it becomes a real centrepiece. Like Cryptocoryne, Barclaya can melt back after a move or a long trip. This is normal. Leave it be and it goes into a short dormancy, then returns strongly with fast, rampant growth.
