Helanthium bolivianum 'Latifolius', once classified under Echinodorus and better known as the dwarf sword, is a small rosette plant with short, broad green leaves. It sits at the front of the tank, where it spreads low across the substrate to form a fresh, lawn-like foreground.
This one is an easy grower. It spreads quickly by runners, sending out daughter plants that knit together into a dense green mat, so it fills in large areas with little fuss. Native to South America, it settles into everything from quiet low-tech tanks to bright, CO2 injected aquascapes. Give it a nutrient-rich substrate and a light trim now and then to keep it low and compact and to stop taller growth from shading the carpet.
