Lobelia cardinalis, the cardinal plant, comes from Northern America and carries dark-green leaves that are purple underneath. Grown submerged it softens to a light-green, with stems reaching 10 to 30cm tall and 5 to 10cm wide. It sits well in the midground, and is a classic in Dutch-style "plant streets".
It is an easygoing grower that does well across low to medium light. Give it stronger light and CO2 and it takes a more compact, bushy form, which makes it a great alternative to Anubias in brighter tanks. In an open aquarium it will grow above the water surface and throw up scarlet flowers while the leaves regain their deeper colour.
