Mopani Wood is a stunning African hardwood harvested from the roots of the Mopane tree (Colophospermum mopane), native to southern Africa. Prized for its dramatic two-toned colouring: deep dark browns swirling against warm, sandy tans. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind natural sculpture with gnarled knots, sweeping grain, and bold, organic shapes that bring instant character to any aquarium or terrarium.
Why Aquascapers Love Mopani Wood:
- More Likely to Sink: Mopani is one of the densest driftwoods available. Unlike most aquarium woods, it's far more likely to sink straight away with little to no need to weigh it down or pre-soak for buoyancy.
- Exceptionally Durable: This is a hardwood built to last. Mopani resists rot and will hold its structure submerged for years, far outlasting softer driftwood options.
- Natural Water Conditioning: Releases beneficial tannins that gently lower pH and soften water, making it ideal for blackwater biotopes and softwater species like tetras, bettas, discus, and dwarf cichlids.
- Perfect Plant Anchor: The textured surface and natural crevices make excellent attachment points for epiphytes like Anubias, Bucephalandra, Java Fern, and mosses.
- Habitat & Shelter: Provides natural hiding spots and grazing surfaces for shrimp, snails, plecos, and small fish.
- Versatile Use: Equally at home in aquariums, paludariums, ripariums, and terrariums. Reptile and amphibian keepers love it too.
Preparation & Care:
Rinse thoroughly before use to remove any dust from transit. Mopani is well known for releasing a strong tea-coloured tannin stain: this is natural and non-toxic, but if you prefer crystal-clear water, boil the wood for 1-2 hours or soak in a bucket for several days before adding it to your tank. A temporary white biofilm may appear after submersion: this is harmless and will be happily consumed by shrimp, snails, and certain fish. It typically clears within a few weeks.
