Nymphaea lotus, the tiger lotus, is a varied West African species with broad leaves that range from green to red-brown, often marked with purple spots. It grows from a central base as a rosette and makes a strong solitary feature, best placed in the midground or as a centrepiece where it has room to spread.
Before it sends leaves to the surface it builds up a flush of submerged leaves, which is where most of its colour and shape can be enjoyed. It can reach anywhere from 20 to 80cm, so give it space and a nutrient-rich substrate to grow into. If you would rather keep it compact and avoid floating leaves, simply trim the tallest leaves and their stems as they head for the surface. Left to grow out in an open tank it can also send up its aromatic flowers. With medium light and a rich base it settles in easily and rewards a little patience.
