Nymphaea lotus, the tiger lotus, is a varied West African species with broad leaves ranging from green to red-brown and scattered with purple spots. The red variety brings deep colour to a tank and works best as a solitary feature, sitting in the midground or towards the back where it has room to spread.
Before it puts up floating leaves, the tiger lotus forms plenty of submerged leaves, which is when it looks its best in an aquascape. If you want to keep it low and leafy, simply prune the tallest leaves and the runners that reach for the surface. In an open tank you can let it flower, and the aromatic blooms are worth seeing. A nutritious substrate encourages strong growth, and it can reach anywhere from 20 to 80cm, so give it space in a larger aquarium.
