Black Arowana (Osteoglossum ferreirai)
The Black Arowana is a rare and stunning freshwater predator native to the Rio Negro basin in South America. Known for its sleek, metallic-black body and graceful movements, this “dragon fish” makes an unforgettable centerpiece in any large aquarium. Juveniles display yellow-tinted highlights that gradually darken as they mature into their signature jet-black form.
Highly prized for its elegance and powerful presence, the Black Arowana is also an impressive surface swimmer capable of leaping to catch prey—earning it the nickname “water monkey.” It thrives in a spacious, well-covered aquarium with soft, slightly acidic water and warm tropical temperatures between 26–30°C.
This carnivorous species requires a varied diet of high-quality arowana pellets, frozen shrimp, and live foods such as crickets or worms. Best suited for experienced aquarists, the Black Arowana can grow up to 120 cm and live for 15–20 years with proper care.
