Royal Delhezi Bichir (Polypterus delhezi)
The Royal Delhezi Bichir, also known as the Armoured Bichir or Barred Bichir, is a striking, prehistoric-looking freshwater fish native to the Congo River Basin in Central Africa. Its thick, eel-like body features bold vertical stripes on an olive to grey background, along with bright yellow fins and signature spiny dorsal finlets that give it a truly ancient appearance.
Delhezi Bichirs typically reach 35–40 cm in length and require a large aquarium (minimum 300 litres) with soft substrate, plenty of hiding spots, and secure lids—these fish are known escape artists and surface breathers. They prefer slow-moving, warm water between 25–29 °C, with a neutral to slightly acidic pH (6.5–7.5).
This species is carnivorous, thriving on a diet of meaty foods like prawns, earthworms, sinking carnivore pellets, and frozen fish. Though peaceful toward similarly sized tankmates, they will eat anything small enough to fit in their mouth—so avoid keeping them with nano fish.
With their hardy nature, unique appearance, and calm temperament, Royal Delhezi Bichirs are an excellent choice for experienced hobbyists seeking a distinctive oddball predator for their display tank.
