Ceylon Green Pufferfish (Dichotomyctere fluviatilis)
The Ceylon Green Pufferfish is a striking and intelligent brackish-to-freshwater species known for its vivid green back, yellow belly, and curious personality. Native to the coastal rivers and estuaries of Sri Lanka, India, and Bangladesh, this puffer displays a beautiful blend of pattern and color, making it a standout in any species or brackish aquarium.
Ceylon Puffers grow to around 15–17 cm, so they require a minimum tank size of 120 litres with ample swimming space and hiding spots. While juveniles can tolerate freshwater, adults thrive in brackish water (SG 1.005–1.015), with warm temperatures between 24–28 °C and a pH of 7.5-8.2.
Known for their high intelligence and quirky behavior, they are territorial and best kept alone or in large tanks with careful stocking. These puffers are carnivores with constantly growing teeth, so they must be fed a diet of hard-shelled foods like snails, mussels, cockles, and crustaceans to help wear down their beaks.
