Cupid Cichlid (Biotodoma cupido)
The Cupid Cichlid is a peaceful and elegant South American cichlid known for its shimmering, iridescent body and gentle temperament. Native to the slow-moving rivers and floodplains of the Amazon Basin, this species is named for the subtle heart-shaped markings near its gill plate, giving rise to the nickname “Cupid.”
Typically growing to around 10–12 cm, Cupid Cichlids do well in community aquariums with other peaceful species. They prefer soft, slightly acidic water (pH 5.5–7.0) and temperatures between 25–28 °C. A sand substrate, driftwood, leaf litter, and subdued lighting help recreate their natural environment and bring out their best colours.
Their diet should include high-quality pellets, frozen foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp, and occasional live foods. When kept in pairs or small groups, they display interesting social behaviors and can become quite interactive with their surroundings.
Perfect for aquarists who love the personality of cichlids but prefer a more peaceful species, the Cupid Cichlid adds both subtle beauty and calm energy to a tropical tank.
