Redhook Myleus (Myloplus rubripinnis)
The Redhook Myleus is a stunning and peaceful freshwater fish known for its rounded, silver body and signature red-tipped anal fin that resembles a hook—hence the name. Native to the Amazon and Orinoco River basins, this species is part of the same family as piranhas and pacus, but is entirely plant-friendly and non-aggressive.
These fish are active, fast-swimming, and thrive in schools of 5 or more. They are currently juvenile at 8–10cm, they can grow up to 40 cm or more in a spacious aquarium. They are best kept in tanks of 400 L or larger, with gentle flow, soft water, and subdued lighting. A secure lid is recommended, as they are powerful jumpers.
Redhook Myleus are primarily herbivorous—feed them a mix of algae wafers, vegetable-based pellets, and blanched greens like spinach or zucchini. They also accept frozen or flake foods on occasion. Hardy and adaptable, they’re ideal for large peaceful community tanks and bring vibrant movement and colour to any setup.
