Altum Angelfish (Pterophyllum altum)
The Altum Angelfish is the largest and most majestic of all angelfish species, renowned for its tall body, graceful finnage, and elegant presence. Native to the blackwater tributaries of the Orinoco and upper Amazon Rivers, this wild-type species displays shimmering silver bodies with vertical black bands and hints of red or bronze around the gill plates.
Unlike common angelfish (P. scalare), Altums are more vertically elongated, making them especially stunning in tall aquariums with open space and subdued lighting.
Altum Angelfish can reach up to 35 cm in height (including fins) and require a minimum tank size of 250 litres, with a height of at least 60 cm. They thrive in warm (27–30 °C), soft, acidic water (pH 4.5–6.8) and appreciate driftwood, vertical structures, and low-flow environments that mimic their natural blackwater habitats.
Peaceful but territorial during breeding, Altums do best in groups of 5–6 or more. Feed a varied diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and live foods to keep them healthy and vibrant.
Altum Angelfish are ideal for experienced aquarists looking to keep a true wild angelfish species with unmatched grace and scale.
